Employment Barriers are Sometimes Legal Problems Legal Action Can Help Solve
Written by: Legal Action of Wisconsin
Legal Action of Wisconsin works with clients that face barriers to finding and maintaining employment. We help our clients understand their rights and the legal options available to resolve their issues and achieve the best possible outcomes.
We often assist clients with issues related to:
- Criminal Record Correction, Pardons, and Expungement
- Driver’s Licenses and Traffic Tickets In Partnership with the Center for Driver’s License Recovery and Employability
- Professional or Occupational Licenses
- Municipal Court Defense in Milwaukee County
- Warrants Caused by Inability to Pay Court Debts (i.e., Ticket/Forfeiture Cases or Child Support)
For example, Lucia was arrested for a charge that was later dropped. Even so, the charge was visible on her record and she felt it was a barrier to finding a job. She tried to solve the problem herself but continued to struggle to find work. Once she contacted us, we filed the proper paperwork to have the Department of Justice remove the arrest from her record. Lucia is now free to pursue the career she wants without worrying about this employment barrier.
Legal Action has attorneys who help students at Technical Colleges and other higher education institutions in Wisconsin resolve their legal barriers to using their degrees and finding employment. Some share their experiences below.
“Thank you so much I cannot thank you enough. These decisions are definitely life changing so I will forever be in your debt. I was fully licensed yesterday as a substance abuse counselor. Thank you for opening up so many opportunities.” – Client and tech college student we were able to help with expungements and pardons
“We did it!! Thank you so very much! I graduated Friday with a 3.89 GPA! Was hired for PRN work yesterday! I will be starting as soon as I can get my temporary COTA [Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant] license, then working on making it official by getting certified and licensed! This will help with so many things!” – Client we helped obtain a pardon
Legal Action helped a tech college student who had worked hard to improve their life with getting their felony conviction expunged. After undergoing substance abuse treatment and receiving this expungement, the student is ready to pursue their education and join the Army Reserves.
A student studying criminal justice obtained a pardon for their only conviction, which happened when they were 17 years old. A member of the pardon advisory board, upon hearing that the student was interested in a career in law enforcement, encouraged the student to explore a career with the Department of Corrections.
A tech college student was working hard on receiving their GED so they could explore a health care program at the college and get a better job. A retail theft ticket and long-ago felony conviction were barriers to finishing school and getting licensed. Legal Action helped them get the ticket dismissed and a pardon granted for the felony. They are now able to seek employment in a helping profession and continue on their path to a better life.
